Event Details: We are hosting a brunch to honor a stellar guy and my brother in arms. I had the pleasure of serving in the army with Anthony Hongach (AJ), while with the 10th Mtn Division in upstate NY. AJ came from Korea prior to my promotion to senior line medic, at the time I was 3rd platoon medic. AJ was assigned to 3rd platoon weapons squad, he was a machine gunner. As platoon medic I fell in with weapons squad - we were a tight knit crew.

AJ was one of the best, he was full of life. He was short with big feet, which made him the brunt of many jokes. A real jokester himself, he could make anybody laugh, and almost always at the most inopportune moments. He made the tough times a little more bearable. AJ got out of the army not long after I did, serving two more deployments in the civilian sector. Our once super tight knit group slowly parted ways, everyone going in a different direction in life. Like many veterans do, AJ struggled with the transition back to civilian life. It was ultimately a battle he couldn’t win. I got the call on February 17, 2021 - AJ was dead.

After we carried him to his final resting place, AJ’s mother, Dawn, was inconsolable. I can still hear the pain in her voice, and her words,” I couldn’t save my son”. Dawn and Anthony’s sister, Jackie, have since started the “Stay Chosin foundation.”. While not able to save AJ, Dawn and Jackie have made it their mission to help other veterans and their families.
